NEW GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT
We would like to welcome back to the New York Tolkien Conference Dr. Corey Olsen aka The Tolkien Professor. If you attended the 2015 New York Tolkien Conference you may recall Dr. Olsen reading from the work of Tolkien alongside live music provided by The Lonely Mountain Band. Check out our video archive for footage from the program here
Dr. Olsen will be moderating “Signum Presents Tolkien: A Round-Robin discussion.” See our full schedule below for details.
Additionally Dr. Olsen will be participating in our panel discussion “Teaching Tolkien in Today’s University” moderated by Leslie A. Donovan and Megan Abrahamson.
Dr. Corey Olsen is the President of Signum University, where he also teaches classes on J.R.R. Tolkien, Chaucer, and modern fantasy literature. Through the Mythgard Institute, a research division of Signum, and in his persona as The Tolkien Professor, Dr. Olsen offers free weekly, interactive discussions on works of speculative fiction and the “new literature” of cinema and video game adaptations like Lord of the Rings Online. Dr. Olsen has a B.A in English and Astrophysics from Williams College and an M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D in medieval literature from Columbia University. Before founding Signum University, Dr. Olsen taught at Temple University, Columbia University, and Washington College.
Signum University is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, online higher education institution specializing in the study of imaginative literature. Based in New Hampshire, Signum boasts an international community of students, faculty, staff, and supporters dedicated to offering a low-cost, accessible graduate program. A digitally native organization, Signum has built a digital campus employing technology and processes and technology that take advantage of our virtual, interconnected world. Signum also promotes the study and enjoyment of speculative works through free programs like Signum Symposia and the Signum Academy Summer Reading Camps for children.
When Dr. Olsen is not participating in programming you will be able to find him, unless he is being a tricksy hobbit, at the Signum University table on the 7th Floor.
If you checked out the program schedule after our last update please note that we have completely overhauled the schedule. A few programs have shifted time slots and we have added the Dr. Corey Olsen Signum Round Robin discussion. The downloadable .pdf program schedule has also been significantly revised. This is the final schedule, no further changes will occur. We will have copies of a grid-schedule at the event.
Please be advised we welcome any and all kinds of Middle-earth Cosplay. However, there are no swords, spears, daggers, arrows, yes even the Black Arrow is not allowed, nor are morghul blades, or any blade of any kind as they violate college policy.
We highly encourage photography. If you intend on streaming or recording a session, kindly ask the speaker’s permission before the start of the session and before you record, stream, et cetera.
We look forward to meeting with you all next weekend!!
